Yardage Charts
Bedding Yardage
Fabric for bedding is often overlooked because of a lack of variety or because of the expense
associated with department store prices. However, at J&O Fabrics' online fabric store we carry
an extensive selection of fabrics that are appropriate for bedding. These are designer fabrics
at discount prices that are ideal for bedspreads,
pillow covers, sheets, blankets, duvets, dust ruffles and so on.
With the following charts J&O offers some estimates on how many yards you may need for specific
bedding projects. These charts are not intended to exhaustively treat every possible bedding project,
but rather to give approximate yardages for some of the most common. Furthermore, as these charts are
guidelines and not definitive statements, they do not eliminate the need for you to make exact
measurements before purchasing fabric. Some members of our staff have over 40 years experience in
the fabric industry, so if these charts do not satisfactorily clarify your questions feel free to
send us your inquiries to info@jandofabrics.com.
Bedspreads
| Custom Bedspreads - 54" Fabric (per side) | ||
|---|---|---|
| SIZE | SOLID/PRINT | QUILTED BEDSPREADS - SOLID |
| Twin | 6 Yards/8 Yards | 10 Yards |
| Full | 6 Yards/8 Yards | 10 Yards |
| Queen | 10 Yards/12 Yards | 14 Yards |
| King | 10 Yards/12 Yards | 14 Yards |
Bedspreads cover the entire bed by folding over the bed pillows and hanging all the way to the floor on a standard bed. Standard beds have a drop of 21" from the top of the bed to the floor and 14" from the top of the box spring to the floor. If a bed is higher than a standard, a longer dust ruffle can be added to finish the look of the ensemble. Bedspreads tend to be not quite as thick and fluffy as comforters.
Recommended Bedspread Fabric:
Coverlets
| Custom Coverlets (per side) | ||
|---|---|---|
| SIZE | SOLID - 54" | PRINT - 54" |
| Twin | 5 Yards | 6 1/2 Yards |
| Full | 6 Yards | 8 1/2 Yards |
| Queen | 6 Yards | 8 1/2 Yards |
| King | 9 Yards | 12 Yards |
Coverlets are similar to comforters in that they cover the top of the bed only. Coverlets do not cover the bed pillows and do not hang to the floor, most often they are used in conjunction with a dust ruffle and shams. Lightweight like a quilt, coverlets are used in warm climates in the summer usually instead of a comforter or bedspread.
Recommended Coverlet Fabric:
Quilted Comforters
| Quilted Comforters - Solid, 54" Fabrics | |
|---|---|
| Comforters | |
| Twin | 8 Yards |
| Full | 8 Yards |
| Queen | 8 Yards |
| King | 12 Yards |
Comforters cover the mattress, but not the box spring. Comforters are fluffier, 'heavier and warmer than bedspreads or coverlets because the top and bottom fabrics are quilted together with batting in the middle. Most often, a comforter is used with a dust ruffle to decoratively cover the box spring and hang to the floor. Since a comforter is not long enough to cover the bed pillows, many people use shams.
| Duvets (per side) | |
|---|---|
| SIZE | SOLID/PRINT - 54" |
| Twin | 5 Yards/5 Yards |
| Full | 6 Yards/6 Yards |
| Queen | 6 Yards/6 Yards |
| King | 9 Yards/9 Yards |
Duvet covers are used to decorate and protect down filled comforters and blankets. They work like giant pillow cases and usually have a button or tie enclosure at one end.
Pillow Shams
| Flanged Pillow Sham Cutting Chart | ||
|---|---|---|
| Pillow Size | Dimensions | Cut Size of Fabric |
| Standard | 20" x 26" | 27" x 72" |
| Queen | 20" x 30" | 27" x 80" |
| King | 20" x 36" | 27" x 92" |
| Sham Type | Yardage |
|---|---|
| Knife Edged | 1 1/2 Yards |
| Corded | 1 1/2 Yards for body, 1/2 Yard for cord |
| Shirred Corded | 1 1/2 Yards for body, 1 1/2 Yards for cord |
| Ruffled | 1 1/2 Yards for body, 1 1/2 Yards for ruffle |
| Double Ruffled | 1 1/2 Yards for body, 1 1/2 Yards for first ruffle, 2 Yards for second ruffle |
| Flanged (tailored) | 2 Yards |
| Contrasting Flange (tailored) | 2 Yards for body, 1 Yard for contrasting flange |
| Jumbo Knotted Corners | 1 1/2 Yards for body, 1 1/2 Yards for cord |
Shams are decorative pillow covers. Usually ruffled or flanged, shams are used as extra
pillows on beds to hide the bed pillows and coordinate with the outer bed covering such as bedspreads
or comforters.
Pillows that are described as flanged include a decorative band of fabric around the pillow that is
straighter, or more tailored, than a ruffled pillow.
Dust Ruffles
| Custom Dust Ruffles - 14"-17" Drop | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| SOLID/PRINT - 54" | |||
| SIZE | TAILORED | SHIRRED | BOX PLEATED |
| Twin | 3 1/2 Yards / 4 Yards | 6 1/2 Yards / 8 Yards | 5 Yards / 6 Yards |
| Full | 4 1/2 Yards / 5 Yards | 7 Yards / 9 Yards | 6 Yards / 6 Yards |
| Queen | 5 Yards / 5 Yards | 10 Yards / 12 Yards | 6 Yards / 7 Yards |
| King | 6 Yards / 6 Yards | 12 Yards / 14 Yards | 6 1/2 Yards / 7 Yards |
A dust ruffle, or bed skirt, is used when the box spring of the bed is visible or when the top of the bed cover, like a bedspread or comforter, does not extend all the way to the floor. Dust ruffles fit under the mattress and on top of the box spring and reach the floor. Typical beds need a 14" dust ruffle, but higher beds could require an 18" or 22" dust ruffle. Many four-poster beds require a 22" dust ruffle. To measure for a dust ruffle, measure from the top of the box spring to the floor. If a bed measures 17" for a dust ruffle, an 18" dust ruffle can be pinned to fit exactly. Most dust ruffles are either ruffled or tailored.
| Custom Dust Ruffles - 17"-27" Drop | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| SOLID/PRINT - 54" | |||
| SIZE | TAILORED | SHIRRED | BOX PLEATED |
| Twin | 4 Yards | 8 Yards | 6 Yards |
| Full | 5 Yards | 9 Yards | 6 Yards |
| Queen | 5 Yards | 10 Yards | 7 Yards |
| King | 6 Yards | 12 Yards | 7 Yards |
The term drop usually refers to the distance from the top of the bed to the floor or the distance
from the top of the box spring to the floor. The drop measurement is important when considering
a bedspread to ensure that it reaches the floor. Standard drop from the top of the bed to the floor is 21".
The drop measurement is also important for comforters and coverlets when choosing a dust ruffle.
The drop on the dust ruffle is measured from the top of the box spring to the floor.
bStandard drop on a dust ruffle is 14" and most comforter sets include a dust ruffle with a 14" drop.
If the drop on a bed is higher than 14", then a longer dust ruffle can be layered
underneath to drop all the way to the floor.
Shirred refers to fabric which is gathered to make decorative folds.
A box pleat refers to two folds of fabric brought together to form a pleat.
Headboards
| Upholstered Headboard - Gathered Border | |
|---|---|
| Twin | 3 1/2 Yards |
| Full | 5 1/2 Yards |
| Queen | 6 Yards |
| King | 6 1/2 Yards |
A headboard is a vertical board or panel forming the head of a bedstead.
Heavier upholstery fabrics such as chenille and tweed can be used to cover headboards.
Tapestry fabric can also be used for this purpose.
The amounts above are for the front side of the headboard. To upholster both side simply double the yardage.
The yardage amount is based on solid, 54" wide fabric. Extra yardage may be required to match patterns.
Standard Bedding Sizes
The following standard bedding sizes are intended to expedite the process of measuring by giving you the approximate dimensions of most bedding. Actual sizes may vary, so this guide does not eliminate the need to take measurements of your bedding before purchasing fabric.

How to Measure for Bedding
To avoid the pitfalls of purchasing too little or too much fabric, the following guide indicates the measurements you will need to take to get your bedding project started off right.
You will need to measure:
- The width of the mattress
- The length of the mattress
- The drop from the top of the mattress to the floor
- The drop from the top of the box spring to the floor
- The drop from the mattress to the top of the box spring
These measurements will allow you to determine more exactly how many yards of fabric are required for your bedding project.
Yardage Chart for Draperies
An important part of any decorative project is the drapery fabric you choose. Beyond simply selecting the right print and coordinating colors, decorating with drapery fabrics also entails purchasing the correct yardage. Failure to do so can stunt a project before it gets off the ground.
With the following charts J&O offers some estimates on how many yards you may need for specific window treatments. These charts are not intended to exhaustively treat every possible drapery project, but rather to give approximate yardages for some of the most common. Furthermore, as these charts are guidelines and not definitive statements, they do not eliminate the need for you to make exact measurements before purchasing fabric. Some members of our staff have over 40 years experience in the retail fabric industry, so if these charts do not satisfactorily clarify your questions feel free to send us your inquiries to info@jandofabrics.com.
Balloon Shades
| Balloon Shades – 63" long window | ||
|---|---|---|
| Single Window | Double Window | |
| Functional: | 7 Yards | 10 Yards |
| Stationary: | 4 Yards | 7 Yards |
What are balloon shades? Balloon shades, like Roman shades, are composed of a fabric body that gathers up to the top of a window to create soft, billowing folds.
Soft, lightweight fabrics should be chosen for balloon shades. Balloon shades should also be lined with a light material, but not with interlining. Balloon shades are intended to be light and airy.
Roman Shades
| Roman Shades – 63” long window | |
|---|---|
| Single Window | Double Window |
| 2 ½ Yards | 5 Yards |
There are two types of Roman shades: classic and flat. Classic Roman shades have overlapping folds when lowered, while flat Roman shades have no folds when lowered. Roman shades should be made out of full bodied fabric.
Swags and Cascades
| Single Window | Double Window |
|---|---|
| 3 ½ - 7 Yards | 1 ½ Yards per additional swag |
A swag is a one-piece valance which is cut longer on either end so that it frames the entire top
half of the window. Swags are usually hung over rods.
Swags should be done out of fabric that has body but is soft. Anything too crisp or stiff,
such as chintz, is not a good choice.
Cascades are folded pieces of fabric that fall from the top of the drapery heading to create a zigzag effect.

Size Chart for Men's Suits
Your suit size is based on your chest and height measurements. For example, if your chest measures 44" you would wear a size 44 suit. How tall you are will determine whether you need a Short (S), Regular (R), or a Long (L) suit. These measurements are for reference only. Allow a difference for actual suit measurements.

Measuring for Men's Garments
| Measuring for Suits | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Measurement | How To | |||
| Chest | With your arms down at your side, take a tape measure and place it level under your arms and completely around your body (don't hold your breath). Be sure to cross over the shoulder blades and the fullest part of your chest (usually around the nipples). Remember that suit sizes are equal to your chest size. Be sure to allow room for breathing and movement. | |||
| Jacket Waist | Measure horizontally around your stomach at the level of the bottom of the ribcage. This measurement may be where you are narrowest or widest. Allow some room for breathing and movement. | |||
| Shoulder Width | Measure from the end of your left shoulder to the end of your right shoulder. This measurement should be equal to the desired width of the jacket's shoulders. | |||
| Jacket | Measure from where the top of the shoulder meets the shirt collar, vertically down your front to where you would like the jacket to end. Use a jacket you like as a guide. | |||
| Sleeves | Measure from the top of the end of your shoulder to the base of your thumb (located at the wrist joint). If you are unsure, you could wear a jacket you like and take the sleeve measurement from where the seams on the shoulder meet to the base of the sleeve. | |||
| Measuring for Dress Shirts | ||||
| Your dress shirt size is determined by your neck size and arm length. For example, a 16.5 x 34/35 dress shirt will fit a man whose neck size is 16 inches and whose arm length is 34 to 35 inches. | ||||
| Neck | Keeping the measuring tape snug but not tight, measure around the fullest part of your neck. For a looser fit, place 2 fingers between the tape and your neck. Alternatively, measure a shirt that fits you well in the collar by laying the collar flat and measuring from center of top collar button to end of buttonhole. Round your measurement to the nearest 1/2 inch. | |||
| Sleeves | Bend arm slightly at elbow and begin measuring from the center back of your neck under the collar over the top of your shoulder and down the outside of your arm to your wrist. Most people prefer the cuff to fall about an inch below the wrist bone. | |||
| Measuring for Pants | ||||
| Typically the waist size of a suit pant is 6" less than the suit size. For example, a suit size 42 jacket comes with a 36" waist pant. | ||||
| Waist | Using a measuring tape, measure around your waistline where you normally wear your pants. Keep a finger between your body and the measuring tape. Pants sizes are equal to your waist size. | |||
| Seat | Measure around your hips and buttocks at their widest point on a pair of well-fitting trousers (not jeans). Make sure your pockets are empty and the tape is not restrictive. | |||
| Inseam | Using a pair of pants that fit you well, measure from the top of the inner pant leg seam to the opening at the bottom of the pant leg. The number of inches is the inseam length, rounded to the nearest half inch. | |||
| Outseam | Measure from the top of the waistband on a pair of pants (not jeans), keeping the measure taut, down to where you wish the bottom of the pants to end. Please bear in mind that the fit you want over the shoe will affect the desired length. | |||
| Crotch | Measure from the top of the trouser waistband at the front, between your legs, to top of the waistband at the back. Allow as much space as needed for comfort. | |||
| Thigh | Empty your pockets, then measure comfortably around the thigh of your trousers (no jeans) at the widest point. This is a skin measurement and should be taken just below the crotch. | |||
| Knee | Keep your leg straight and measure against your skin comfortably around your knee at the widest point. | |||
| Ankle | Trouser bottoms should ideally harmonize with the shoes, covering between 1/2 and 2/3 of their surface. Narrow ankles will make the shoe look large, the trousers sit higher (and therefore need to be shorter), and vice versa. One tip is to measure the ankle width of some trousers you like the cut of. To do this simply lie them flat, measure one side and then double the measurement. | |||
| Belt | You should order the same size belt as your waist size. If your waist size is an odd number, order the next larger size. | |||
| Casual Shirts and Sweaters Size Chart | ||||
| Size | Chest | Waist | Neck | Arm |
| XS | 34" - 36" | 26" - 27" | 13" - 13 1/2" | 31" - 32" |

Yardage Chart for Quilts
During the High Middle Ages a fabric was commissioned to chronicle one of the most important events of those times: the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The famous Bayeux Tapestry is a 270 foot long embroidered cloth depicting this event as well as other chapters of the Norman conquest of England. Although few today would undertake such an ambitious task, even a novice quilter can begin to tell their stories in fabric.
The intriguing story of the Bayeux Tapestry shows that quilting can be a wonderful means of telling fascinating stories. With a bit of imagination you can also begin to quilt wonderful stories in fabric that you can share with your family and friends.
With the following charts J&O offers some estimates on how many yards you may need for specific quilting projects. These charts are not intended to exhaustively treat every possible quilting project, but rather to give approximate yardages for some of the most common. Furthermore, as these charts are guidelines and not definitive statements, they do not eliminate the need for you to make exact measurements and plan ahead before purchasing fabric. Some members of our staff have over 40 years experience in the retail fabric industry, so if these charts do not satisfactorily clarify your questions feel free to send your inquiries to info@jandofabrics.com.

Getting Started
Before you begin work on your quilt there are some factors to consider. Good planning avoids costly miscalculations, especially those of buying too much or too little fabric. Some of the things to determine before setting to work are the following:
- The size the quilt is going to be.
- Whether or not it will drop down the sides of the bed, and if so, how far.
- If it will be tucked under the pillows
- The size of each block within the quilt
- The layout of the blocks
- The width of the fabric you are going to use
- Whether or not you will sash between the rows and the blocks

Calculating Fractions for Quilts
To further assist you in your quilting project, the following chart indicates how you can calculate yardage fractions on a standard calculator.
- 1/8 of a yard = 4 1/2 inches
- 1/4 of a yard = 9 inches
- 3/8 of a yard = 13 1/2 inches
- 1/2 of a yard = 18 inches
- 5/8 of a yard = 22 1/2 inches
- 3/4 of a yard = 27 inches

Common Quilting Patterns
Over time, certain styles of quilt received particular names. In 1934, the American author Carl Carmer published a list with quilt names. Some of the names are taken from Biblical episodes, while the back stories of others are now lost. Examples of most of these types of quilts can be found by doing a quick search over the Internet. You may be inspired to try and make your own version of one of these quilts, or perhaps you'll get some ideas on how to make a story of your own.

Quilt Backing Yardage Requirements
(estimates based on 45" wide fabric)
To use the following chart take the length of your quilt, double it and add 18" to the sum. These measurements will allow you to determine how many yards you will need to back your quilt. The extra half yard (18") that is factored in to the following measurements allows for shrinkage and uneven cutting. This guide does not eliminate the need to take measurements of your quilt before purchasing fabric for the backing.

How to Care for Your Quilt
Caring for a quilt continues long after
the last stitch has been put in place. To preserve your work it is very important to care for your quilt.
Therefore, let's consider some things you should do and some things you must avoid in order to
keep your quilt in the best possible shape.
You should avoid storing your quilt in plastic bags or near heat sources.
Also, do not store your quilt in an attic, basement or garage.
The best way to store your quilt would be to place it in a bed sheet or pillow case.
Muslin bags and muslin covered tubes are also ideal ways of storing your quilt.
Every so often, allow your quilt to air outside out of direct sunlight.
Refold your quilt once a month or so to prevent permanent creases.
If your quilt is washable, do so only in cold water with gentle soap or hair shampoo.
To dry your quilt, lay it flat over a white towel on a flat surface.
Never hang your quilt to dry or put it in a dryer.
Upholstery Yardage
Reupholstering your furniture can be a daunting task. Especially when it comes to purchasing the right yardage. That is why we at J&O Fabrics have compiled a basic chart to help you determine how many yards you will need for your upholstery projects. These charts are intended to assist our customers in their projects by helping them avoid the expenses of purchasing too few or too many yards of fabric.
With the following charts J&O offers some estimates on how many yards you may need for specific upholstering projects. These charts are not intended to exhaustively treat every possible upholstery situation, but rather to give approximate yardages for some of the most common. Furthermore, as these charts are guidelines and not definitive statements, they do not eliminate the need for you to make exact measurements before purchasing fabric nor do they factor in many of the variables you may encounter during your project. Nevertheless, some members of our staff have over 40 years experience in the fabric industry, so if these charts do not satisfactorily clarify your questions feel free to send us your inquiries to info@jandofabrics.com.

Drapery Styles
Are you at a loss as to what you can do with your windows? The seemingly endless window treatment possibilities can be overwhelming. However, it doesn't have to be that way. The following images are meant to give you some ideas that you can consider when trying to decide how to decorate your windows.
Balloon and Roman Shades
Balloon shades, like Roman shades, are composed of a fabric body that gathers up to the top of a window to create soft, billowing folds. Soft, lightweight fabrics should be chosen for balloon shades. Balloon shades should also be lined with a light material, but not with interlining. Balloon shades are intended to be light and airy.
There are two types of Roman shades: classic and flat. Classic Roman shades have overlapping folds when lowered, while flat Roman shades have no folds when lowered. Roman shades should be made out of full bodied fabric. As you will be able to see with the following examples, there is some variety among the two types of Roman shades.
Shades - Balloon
Shades - Flat Roman
Shades - Shirred and Folded
Valances - Board Mounted
Valances are short draperies that hang along the top part of a window, with or without a curtain underneath. It can also be made of wood or metal that is painted or covered with fabric. Valances are meant to cover the top of the window as well as the supporting hardware. Valances are typically no longer than 20".
Valances - Rod Pocket
Valances - Pleated
Valances - Tab Top
Swags
A swag is a one-piece valance which is cut longer on either end so that it frames the entire top half of the window. Swags are usually hung over rods. Swags should be done out of fabric that has body but is soft. Anything too crisp or stiff, such as chintz, is not a good choice.
