The Cougars are best known for their football program, which has a long history of success. The University has a claim on the 1915 national championship in football. Although Cornell University is commonly recognized as the champion for that season, Washington State also had a formidable campaign. That team had a record of 10-0-0, won the Rose Bowl over Brown University and outscored its opponents 204-10.
The Cougars enjoy a number of rivalries in football including ones with Washington, Oregon, Oregon State and Idaho. Washington State's series with Washington currently stands at 64-30-6 in favor of Washington. The Cougars currently lead the series Oregon State 47-41-3, while they trail in the series with Oregon 39-38-7.
The Cougars' basketball program was awarded the national title for the 1917 season. The Cougars, coached by Jack Friel, also played in the 1941 national championship game versus Wisconsin, but lost 39-34.
Washington State's other recognized national championships are in boxing (1936) and Indoor Track and Field (1977).
