Beginning in the late 1930s, Bill Hanna and Joseph Barbera were paired at MGM's cartoon studio to work on animated shorts. The first collaboration between Hanna and Barbera resulted in a cartoon called Puss Gets the Boot. The cartoon featured a gray cat called Jasper chasing an unnamed mouse; eventually the cat would become Tom and the mouse would be known as Jerry. Thus, Tom and Jerry were born.
Over the years, the Tom and Jerry cartoons would become highly popular, winning seven Academy Awards in the category of Best Short Subject: Cartoons. Tom and Jerry won Oscars for:
-
1943: The Yankee Doodle Mouse
-
1944: Mouse Trouble
-
1945: Quiet Please!
-
1946: The Cat Concerto
