At the end of the 1970 and the beginning of the 1980s, the Buccaneers began to turn things around. Among the highlights of these years were three trips to the postseason, including advancing as far as the NFC Championship game in 1979, which they lost 9-0 to the Los Angeles Rams.
A sharp decline started for Tampa Bay in 1983, the first of 14 straight losing seasons. Out of those seasons, thirteen or more saw the Buccaneers lose at least ten games.
With the hiring of Tony Dungy as head coach in 1996, the ground was set for change. Dungy and his staff would establish the Bucs as a defensively oriented team. Tampa Bay experienced an immediate turnaround. Dungy led the team to the playoffs four times during his tenure.
His replacement was Jon Gruden, who had been coach of the Oakland Raiders. In his first season at the helm, Gruden led the Buccaneers to a 12-4 record during the regular season en route to a berth in Super Bowl XXXVII. Facing off against the Oakland Raiders, the Bucs won 48-21 for the franchise's first Super Bowl.
