Batik is a dying technique applied to fabric that was brought to its pinnacle in Indonesia, the country it is most associated with. The process begins by drawing the designs on the fabric with melted wax. Then the fabric is immersed in dye, which will only penetrate the areas of fabric not covered in wax. Once the wax is removed the pattern is clearly visible. Wax and dye applications may be repeated for color variation. The lines typically found in batiks are produced by cracking the hardened wax before applying the dye.
