Details

The works of George Nelson (1908-1986) assay such fields as interior, industrial and exhibition design. Writer, sculptor, designer, impresario; George Nelson was all of these, and upon each discipline he stamped his sophisticated Modernism.

As head of his own design studio, George Nelson surrounded himself with talented artists who created many iconic works which bear the name of his studio. For this reason, in an interview for metropolismag.com, designer Irving Harper likened George Nelson to Ballets Russes impresario Serge Diaghilev.

One of the most outstanding designs executed during this period was Pavement. Pavement was designed in 1950 by Irving Harper of the George Nelson and Co. studio for Schiffer Prints. Irving Harper worked with George Nelson in his design studio for 17 years and worked on projects ranging from graphics to furniture. some of his designs - Pavement included - have been wrongly attributed to George Nelson. Among Mr. Harper's other famous works are the Marshmallow Sofa  for Herman Miller and the Starburst Clock he designed for the Howard Miller Clock Co.

The design of Pavement Copper consists of 1 7/8" diameter chocolate circles over a copper background. Within the circles are asterisk-like designs in black. Also on the print are black stick designs.

This Irving Harper designed fabric is an impeccable example of his craft and displays the perpetual modernity that is a hallmark of the very best Mid-Century designs. More than fifty years after they were designed, these decorator fabrics are still fresh and inspiring.

The possibilities of Pavement Copper are so extensive... draperies, wall hangings, seat cushions, pillows, lampshades, slipcovers and table covers are just a few of the items that can be made.
