The history of track and field success has led to the University becoming known as "Tracktown, USA". Oregon has won five men's NCAA outdoor track and field championships, four men's cross country championships, and one women's outdoor track and field championship and two women's cross country championships.
In basketball Oregon notably won the very first NCAA Basketball Championship in 1939 by defeating Ohio State 46-33. Since then the Ducks have had other fine seasons including various Pac-10 championships.
The Oregon Ducks' football program has been a prominent part of the University's athletic life since the mid 1890s. Part of the football tradition at Oregon includes the University's intense and long standing rivalry with the Oregon State Beavers. As of 2006 the game has been played 110 times, with the Ducks holding 55-45-10 advantage.
One of the famous figures to have passed through the University's football program is coach Hugo Bezdek, who would later go on to lead Arkansas and Penn State. In his 6 seasons with the University he compiled a 30-10-4 record, two undefeated seasons and a win in the 1916 Rose Bowl over the Penn Quakers. Since Bezdek left the program in 1917, the Ducks have gone through 15 coaches and are now on their sixteenth. Out of those 16 to have followed Bezdek, only 8 have winning records including current coach Mike Bellotti. Another notable figure in Oregon's football history is Len Casanova wo, from 1951-1966, amassed a record of 82-73-8. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1977.
In addition to the aforementioned coaches, the Ducks have produced some excellent players. Both Dan Fouts and Norm van Brocklin played at Oregon, and both would go on to become stars in the NFL at the quarterback position. Eventually, they would both be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
