Hey Diddle Diddle is one of the most famous of all nursery rhymes; one which has been sung to and memorized by countless children for generations. This seemingly benign, nonsensical rhyme has a very interesting history.

Various theories as to its origin have been proposed, although no one theory is universally agreed upon. One theory suggests that the rhyme refers to a scandal during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. Another theory is that the poem depicts elements in the story of Richard III's path to the throne of England. A third theory is that the rhyme is a lesson in astronomy, in which all, or nearly all "characters" in "Hey Diddle Diddle" are constellations visible only in the April night sky.

Regardless of its origins, here follows the famous nursery rhyme:

Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon,
The little dog laughed to see such a sight,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

As for Humpty Dumpty, this famous nursery rhyme is often recited as follows:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.

As with Hey Diddle Diddle, various interpretations have been ventured to explain this nursery rhyme. Some of the proposed theories reference the English Civil War, the death of King Richard III, or the downfall of Cardinal Wolsey.

The design of Nursery Rhymes fabric is a wonderful reminder of these famous rhymes. The design includes the spoon and plate running away, a cow jumping over the moon, a crescent moon wearing a night cap, Humpty Dumpty, and a sky full of grinning stars.

Nursery Rhymes is a splendid novelty fabric that you can use to make quilts, garments, draperies, lampshades, Hawaiian shirts, carrying bags, bed sheets, bedspreads, crafts, pet clothing and more.
