After the 1957 departure of the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants, the Big Apple was left without a National league franchise. The Mets started play in 1962 as the city's next National League team.

The Mets' first season was woeful as they finished with the worst record in the modern era of baseball , 40-120. Only the Cleveland Spiders had lost more games in a season: 1899, when they went 20-134. Nevertheless, the Mets were a popular franchise despite their early struggles.

In 1969, the Mets finished with their first winning season, 100-62, en route to an improbable 5 game World Series triumph over the star-studded Baltimore Orioles.

The Mets would win the World Series once more in 1986, defeating the Boston Red Sox in 7 games. The Mets were led by Dwight "Doc" Gooden, Darryl Strawberry and World Series MVP Ray Knight.

The New York Mets' World Series appearances:

  1. 1969: Won 4-1 over Baltimore Orioles

  2. 1973: Lost 3-4 to Oakland Athletics

  3. 1986: Won 4-3 over Boston Red Sox

  4. 2000: Lost 1-4 to New York Yankees
