Minnesota Vikings Fleece: Plaid

The Minnesota Vikings joined the NFL in 1962 as an expansion team. After several unremarkable seasons, coach Norm Van Brocklin resigned following the 1966 season. In his place the Vikings hired Bud Grant away from the Canadian Football League. Through shrewd deals the Vikings began to build an impressive defense that would become known as the "Purple People Eaters".

The Vikings weren't a defense only team, however. The team had as its quarterback one of the most prolific passers in NFL history: Fran Tarkenton. By the time he retired, Tarkenton held many league records including those for touchdowns and passing yards, although these records have since been surpassed.

As renowned as the People Eaters were during the late 1960s and 1970s, they are most remembered for failing to win a Super Bowl, despite making four appearances between 1970 and 1977.

After Bud Grant retired in 1984 the Vikings went through various coaching changes including rehiring Grant for one season. In 1992, the Vikings hired Dennis Green as head coach. In 10 seasons, Green led the Vikings to 4 NFC Central division titles, 8 playoff appearances, and 2 NFC Championship game appearances. 1998 turned out to be a particularly successful year for the Vikings as they set the record for most points scored in a season. Behind quarterback Randall Cunningham, wide receivers Cris Carter and Randy Moss, and running back Robert Smith the Vikings terrorized opposing defenses.

• 1974 (Super Bowl VIII): Lost 24-7 to the Miami Dolphins

• 1977 (Super Bowl XI): Lost 32-14 to the Oakland Raiders
