Football began as a club sport at Michigan State in the late 1800's, and by 1896 had gained varsity status. Over the course of its history, MSU has won three recognized national championships and eight conference titles. Among the Spartans' football rivals are the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Michigan Wolverines.
The Michigan State Spartans basketball program has also been very successful. Its two national titles were won in 1979 and 2000. The 1979 team was led by Magic Johnson to a 75-64 victory over Larry Bird and the Indiana State Sycamores. In 2000, Morris Peterson led the Spartans to an 89-76 victory over the Florida Gators. In addition, the Spartans have won 10 Big Ten championships.

In ice hockey, the Spartans have established themselves as one of the foremost programs. MSU won national titles in 1966, 1986 and 2007.
