The Maryland Terrapins have a tradition of athletics excellence going back decades. Football and men's and women's basketball have been the sports that Maryland has traditionally excelled at.

Although not as well known today for the exploits of the football team, the Terrapins have a decades long history of football success. During the early part of the 1950s, Maryland fielded dominant teams that compiled a 60-9-2 record between 1949 and 1955. These seasons included going undefeated in 1951 and winning a national championship in 1953.

Between 1973 and 1985, the football program experienced a resurgence, winning  six Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. After another down period, the Terrapins started another chapter in their history with the hiring of Ralph Frieden in 2001. Under his guidance, the Terrapins have been consistently one of the better ACC teams and have produced such current NFL players as Lamont Jordan, Vernon Davis, E. J. Henderson and Shawne Merriman.

As for the men's basketball team, it is virtually synonymous with coach Gary Williams. Coach Williams led the Terrapins to eleven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances between 1993 and 2004, and eight consecutive 20 win season between 1996 and 2004. Also, under his guidance the Terrapins have advanced to the Sweet 16 seven times and the Final Four twice. Finally, in 2002 won its first NCAA National Championship.

The Lady Terps also brought the women's National Championship to Maryland with a win over Duke in 2006.

Maryland has also won national championships in field hockey, men's soccer, men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse.

The design of the Maryland Terrapins Fabric: Squares consists of the University's logos along with the Testudo the Diamondback Terrapin mascot over a black and red squares background.
