Located in the heart of Appalachia, Marshall University has endured through adversity to become one of the most successful programs to make the switch from NCAA Division I-AA to Division I-A football. The adversity came in the form of nearly two decades of losing seasons from the 1960s through the early 1980s. This was exacerbated by the devastating plane crash in 1970 that killed over forty players and coaches, in addition to crew members and team supporters.
Beginning in 1984, the football squad experienced a remarkable renaissance, posting 21 straight winning seasons. During the 1990s, the Thundering Herd had the highest winning percentage of any NCAA Division I program. The Thundering Herds' accomplishments during this time included two Division I-AA national championships in 1992 and 1996.
In 1997, Marshall began competing in the Mid-American Conference of Division I-A. Since then, the Thundering Herd have been to seven bowl games, in which they have posted a 5-2 record. Marshall now competes in Conference USA.
Among the players that helped establish Marshall as a conference and national presence were Randy Moss, Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich.
