In Japan, kanji refers to the characters used in the writing system along with hiragana, katakana and Arabic numerals.
Many of the great artists of Japan were adept not only in depicting scenery through painting, but also in creating the most delicately embellished scrolls with their mastery of calligraphy. Through the use of kanji, hiragana and katakana characters their scrolls became works of art equal to any other.
