"The Earth laughs in flowers." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Brave old-flowers! Wall-flowers, Gilly flowers, Stocks!
For even
as the field-flowers, from which a trifle, a ray of beauty, a drop of
perfume, divides them, they have charming names, the softest in the
language; and each of them, like tiny, art-less ex-votos, or like medals
bestowed by the gratitude of men, proudly bears three or four."
- Maurice Maeterlinck
Of the many subjects that have captivated poets and writers, flowers have occupied one of the most prominent places. The variety of colors, textures and fragrances have inspired the poets and writers of many different cultures to sing the praises of flowers or to use them as metaphors.
Flowers have also served to inspire textile artists. The variety of fabric prints incorporating flowers is immense and always increasing. At J&O Fabrics we carry an extensive selection of flower prints, particularly in novelty weight cotton. Among these quilting fabrics is Iris Garden Fabric.
The iris takes its name from the Greek word for rainbow. In Greek mythology, Iris was the personification of the rainbow and served as a messenger, linking the gods with humanity as rainbows link heaven and Earth. The iris received this name because of the wide variety of colors within the genus.
Irises have not only inspired textile artists, but more traditional artists as well. Vincent van Gogh, in particular, depicted irises in various paintings, including View of Arles with Irises (1888), Irises (1889), Irises (pink/green) (1890), and Irises (1890).
The design of Iris Garden lovingly depicts the beauty of this flower. The design is composed of purple irises with green stems over a white background.
Iris Garden Fabric will make an excellent companion to your projects. It can be used for quilts, bed sheets, garments, fashion accessories, pet clothing, draperies and much more.
