Indiana University's athletics program was initiated in 1867
with a baseball team, and from those long-ago beginnings the Hoosiers have
established one of the premier athletics programs in the nation.
The most prominent athletics program is that of basketball.
The Indiana Hoosiers have won five national championships throughout their
history: 1940, 1953, 1976, 1981 and 1987. Out of these, two were won under coach
Branch McCracken, while the last three came during the tenure of Bob Knight. The
1976 squad was the last men's college basketball team to go finish a season
undefeated.
