For thousands of years sailors have depended on lighthouses in order to avoid shipwreck and find safe harbor. Perhaps the most famous lighthouse in history was found near the ancient Egyptian city of Alexandria. With its light it guided sailors for hundreds of years, and in doing so gained such fame that it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
