The Kansas City Chiefs were foun

The Kansas City Chiefs were founded by Lamar Hunt in 1960 as the Dallas Texans, a charter member of the AFL. The team moved to Kansas City in 1963 and then became part of the NFL once the AFL-NFL merger was completed. The Chiefs also hold the distinction of being the second AFL team to defeat an NFL team in the Super Bowl (the Jets had done so the year before).

In the short history of the AFL, the Chiefs were a dominant force, winning three championships: 1962, 1966 and 1969. In 1962, the then Texans defeated the Houston Oilers 20-17 in a thrilling, two overtime game.

In 1966, the Chiefs beat the Bills 31-7. The Chiefs then advanced to Super Bowl I, where they were defeated 35-10 by the Green Bay Packers.

Finally, in 1969, Kansas City defeated the Oakland Raiders 17-7 to advance to Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings. Although the Vikings were favored, the Chiefs won 23-7.

The Chiefs of these early years had an impressive collection of talent. Head coach Hank Stram was noted for his colorful personality and innovative play calling. He helmed a team that also featured quarterback Len Dawson, linebackers Bobby Bell and Willie Lanier, and defensive tackle Buck Buchanan, all now in the Hall of Fame.

After Stram, the coach the Chiefs are most associated with is Marty Schottenheimer, who spent ten seasons with the team and compiled a record of 101-58-1. During his tenure with the Chiefs, they made seven trips to the playoffs, won three division titles and advanced to the AFC Championship game in 1993, where they lost to the Buffalo Bills.

Some of the most notable Chiefs during and after the Schottenheimer era include cornerback Dale Carter, linebacker Derrick Thomas, tight end Tony Gonzalez, running backs Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson, free safety Deron Cherry, guard Will Shields and defensive end Neil Smith.
