CARING  FOR YOUR DRESS FABRICS

So you were out partying last night and spilled some of that red wine on your brand new satin dress. But you’re not worried, because just like many of today’s linens, chiffons, lames and charmeuses’….you can just throw them into the washing machine. Save that added dry cleaning expense for your brocades, furs, sequenced garments and wools. Even some of the newest dress silks have been specially treated to allow for ease of care without losing their look and feel.

As with any dress fabric, special care must be taken to minimize wrinkling when washing fabrics containing man-made fibers. Wash in hot/warm water using a permanent-press cycle. If your machine does not have a permanent-press cycle, use warm/cool water. When drying, use the proper heat setting and time cycle. Don't use a high or regular setting for all your dress fabrics. Fabrics made from fibers which have low moisture absorbency are fast drying and should be dried using a low temperature setting. This includes:

STORAGE FOR YOUR DRESS FABRICS

Before storing your dress fabrics for an extended period of time, it is important to have them properly laundered to prevent dust, soil and stains from attracting critters. Furthermore, avoid storing your dress fabrics in attics or basements; these places tend to be vulnerable to mold, mildew , insects and other threats. The best location in your home for dress fabric storage is a cool, dry room. If using a closet, make sure there is sufficient air circulation to prevent mold growth. Always store your fabrics out of direct sunlight.

Your dress fabrics can be stored in bags of linen, cotton or muslin. Do not use plastic bags, cedar chests or cardboard boxes for storage. Fumes from polyurethane foam, cedar closets and
