Details

Josef Hoffmann was an Austrian architect who began his career in the late 19th century. By the end of the 1800s Hoffmann had - together with Gustav Klimt, Joseph Mari Olbrich and Koloman Moser - founded the Vienna Secession. The Secessionists included many artists who would later achieve great acclaim including Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka.

Hoffmann himself was a prominent artist, his fields being architecture and the design of consumer goods. Various of his designs are exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both in New York City. Among his most famous works are the Purkersdorf Sanatorium of 1906 and the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, Belgium.

Hoffmann also made textile designs. Design 7208 was designed by him in 1909 during his tenure as artistic director of the Wiener Werkstätte, but never manufactured. In fact, the name Design 7208 is what it was assigned in the mill archive.

Design 7208: Graphite is rendered in a satin weave. The elegant satin sheen combined with the striking colors creates a designer fabric that is as modern today as ever. The textured design consists of gray diamond shapes within rectangles over a black background.

The Josef Hoffmann Design 7208: Graphite fabric can be used to make pillows, wall-hangings, seat cushions, slipcovers, table covers, draperies, curtains, handbags, garments and more.
