The Cleveland Browns are one of the most storied football franchises in the NFL, an idea that is difficult to reconcile with the struggles that have come to characterize the team in recent seasons. There was, however, once a time in which the Browns were the crown of the league and dominated the way few teams ever have.

The Browns were founded in 1946 as a charter member of the All America Football Conference. Within two years the team had already won its first league championship and would win three more before the AAFC merged with the NFL in 1949.

Once the move to the NFL had been made, the Browns continued to win. In the team's first NFL season it won the NFL Championship game 30-28 over the Los Angeles Rams. The Browns repeated as NFL champions in 1954 and 1955. The Browns of these season were led by future Hall of Famers Otto Graham at quarterback, Marion Motley at fullback, and Bill Willis at nose guard.

After Graham retired in 1955, the Browns looked for a leader on offense. The search was completed in 1957 when Jim Brown was drafted out of Syracuse. In his nine seasons Brown led the team three appearances in the NFL Championship game, winning the 1964 edition 27-0 over the Baltimore Colts.

To date, the Browns still have not made a trip to the Super Bowl.
