China Shop: Tin/Bluestone by George Nelson

George Nelson (1908-1986) was one of the foremost industrial designers of the 20th Century. Both his designs and writings garnered him lasting acclaim as a founding father of American modernism.

His innovative design concepts caught the attention of the then president of Herman Miller, D. J. De Pree, and in 1945 he was invited to join their roster of prominent artists. While working for Herman Miller, George Nelson collaborated with such renowned designers as Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi and Harry Bertoia.

Among the most outstanding designs produced by his design studio are the Marshmallow Sofa by Irving Harper, the Coconut Chair, the Platform Bench and the Starburst Clock, also by Irving Harper. He articulated his design philosophy with these works and in the process became a seminal influence in the world of industrial design.
