When I think of Egyptian cotton, I think of comfort, serenity, and relaxation. Unfortunately, this magnificent fabric’s effect on it’s owner in no way reflects what is happening in the industry that produces it.
Over the past six months, the price of cotton in Egypt has risen from £12,000 (roughly $20,000) per ton to £43,000 (roughly $70,000) per ton. This is a 26% increase. As you might imagine, the results of this increase have been extremely volatile.
To protest the price gouging 4,000 workers and about 1,300 factories are on strike. Those taking a stand are demanding that the government adopt temporary measures until the crisis subsides that include abolishing sales tax on cotton and raising customs duties on clothing imports.
Egyptians working in the cotton industry are not the only ones who feel that there should be government intervention. The Center for Trade Union and Workers’ Services is also behind the efforts of the strikers.
