Some vintage fabric tips and tricks include:
- Your old (and sometimes very old) stash! We are all guilty of buying and holding onto fabrics. When a fabric has been stored for a long period of time, it can actually disintegrate upon washing. If the fabric seems to be quite fragile, dry clean it rather than risk it.
- Buying vintage fabric from J&O Fabrics will ensure it is prepared for usage without fear of it fraying to rags.
- Be wary of moth-eaten fabrics found at estate or garage sales. These fabrics often have stains and smells that may not be easy to get out!
- If the fabric seems sturdy enough to wash, you may use your machine on gentle cycle paired with a gentle detergent. If you can avoid drying it in a machine, do so. Lay the fabric flat in a warm room to air dry–it will preserve the delicate fibers.
- Once you have selected and cleaned the vintage fabric of your choice, it is time to make a dress, handbag, hair accessory or other stand-alone piece! Vintage pieces are timeless and garner many compliments.
- When using patterns to complete your vintage projects, you may choose to cut around parts of the vintage fabric that may have discoloration, holes or imperfections. Pockets, fabric flowers, brooches and more are nice ways to disguise a fabric flaw.
