Sewing with minky fabric can be a challenge. The following tips will help the process go more smoothly as you learn to work with this very soft fabric!
- Pin before cutting minky fabric. Minky tends to be a stretchy fabric. If you are pairing it with a standard fabric, you will want to make sure to pin it prior to cutting to ensure a size match. While it may seem extreme, pinning every inch is ideal! This will reduce puckers and slipping under the pressure foot.
- Use a walking foot when sewing with minky. This will allow the top and bottom layers of fabric to pull along at the same rate. If you do not have a walking foot, place the minky fabric on the bottom so the feed dogs can guide it along smoother.
- Do not iron minky. If you must iron the side with traditional fabric, use a low heat setting to prevent damage to the minky side.
- Do not prewash minky. Prewash any other fabrics being used with it to make sure the shrinking is out of the way prior to project, the minky will not shrink.
- Note the nap! Make sure that the nap is laying in the right direction prior to cutting minky fabric. When topstitching, go with the direction of the nap for a smooth finish.
Minky fabric is very soft, making it ideal to use with decorative prints for blankets
