Each day one of the members of our J&O Family has the inviting yet sometimes arduous responsibility of posting our ‘Sewing Tip of the Day ‘ for our fabulous facebook fans and twitter followers to view, comment on, and discuss. And while we enjoy being able to supply those little tid bits of info, every once and awhile we find ourselves seeking the same guidance and assistance from our community of seamstresses, tailors, designers, artisans, crafters and self-taught elders.
On one such occasion, one of my co-workers was making an apron out of a vintage novelty cotton print as a gift for a friend. When she finished the tie band, she realized the print was upside down. She was limited on time, money, and to top it off, the fabric she used was no longer available. Aware of the seemingly obviousness of the error, yet not in a position to fix it in time, she put a call out over the tech waves to our J&O Facebook fans for guidance. The result… some very funny and some very convincing excuses that will cover our backs from almost any craft project boo-boo we may stumble through along the way.
1. ” It was a design decision!” –Diane Kirk Bell
2. “Tell them the tie was made in Australia lol my American hubby says we are all upside down here!!” –Sylvia Long
3.”I always say that a “mistake” lets them know it is handmade with love.” –Cooki Welsh McClatchie
4.”You planned it that way. :)” –Carla Heller Finley
5. “It is never upside down – it is so the individual can see it right side up from their point of view .(lol) “ –Cindy Derryberry
6. “You could use a complimentary solid broadcloth fabric to cut a new one. That comes from my ocd side. My logical side says use it like it is and act surprised if any one notices. lol” –Karen Buck
7. “If you had more time I’d say make the ties out of other material that would go with it. Most of my best projects were from trying to ‘fix’ boo boos!” –Donna Seabridge Wareheim
8.”People pay extra for design elements like that.” -Wendy Kaufman
9.”Just say it is your Amish way of not making any piece perfect. (I’m thinking of Amish quilts w/ upside down block)” –Sandy Currin
10.”As the wonderful ladies in my quilt shop keep reminding me: Mistakes are creative opportunities. Which makes me one of the most opportunistic quilter/seamstress’s around! LOL” –Lorna Holley
Have fun turning sewing mistakes into creative opportunities with any of our fabrics.
