Top 10 DIY dress up pieces for little girls

Every little girl loves dressing up, and here are some do-it-yourself dress up ideas. These are great pieces to supplement a dress up closet. Not every piece has to be made from scratch but a few things that are your little girl’s design make her feel that much more special.

1. Princess hat- Princess hats are simple to make with a semi-circle of stiff paper and some tulle to hang off the top. Keep it simple and let your little girl color the paper, or go all out with trim and fabric.

2. Fairytale cape- Think princess here- anywhere from knee to ankle length. Capes are very easy to sew, and they can be as simple or elaborate as you want. Try gold trim, fur, jewels or pom-poms.

3. Fairy godmother wand- Just about any kind of wand you can dream up you can make. With a wooden dowel and felt or wooden shapes to glue on the end you have the beginnings of any wand you like- hearts, stars, teddy bears etc. Another great thing is that this craft is so simple your little ones can help.

4. Ballerina tutu- All you need for a great tutu is a strip of elastic and lots of tulle.  This is a favorite with little girls, wearing their tutu from first thing in the morning right up until bedtime.

5. Ballerina headband- Few dress up ensembles are complete without headgear. A feathery headband is perfect for a ballerina, whether it be a black swan or the swan princess.

6. Parasol- Parasols are great for dress up or even for just keeping out of the sun. This one is all about the decoration- jewels, glitter paint, feathers, you name it. Just make sure it closes!

7. apron & chef’s hat- Even if you’re an inexperienced sewer this project is worth a try. Very simple  patterns are out there for aprons and hats, and kids love to help mom cook when they’ve got their own kitchen clothes.

8. Hippie jeans- Patches, embroidered trim, or pain are all you need to make a pair of hippie jeans. Peace, love, and denim!

9. Hula skirt- Hula skirts are one project that really can be tailored to the age of your child. Raffia skirts look authentic and are great for a luau party, but they are very delicate and can’t stand much abuse. Thankfully playtime hula skirts are easily made using shredded fabric or sturdy ribbon.

10. Silk flower leis- Where would a hula skirt be without a lei? Use the heaviest thread you can find to string silk flowers, or just glue or sew them on a piece of ribbon. You can make bracelets and headbands too!
