The NFL Never Felt So Good: How-To Make Fleece Blankets

We’ve got you covered for the whole NFL season – and as you watch teams play in miserably cold conditions, be sure to cuddle up with your very own NFL blanket.

Every NFL team is available in four classic fabrics: polar fleece, novelty cotton, cotton flannel and tailgating vinyl. You can make:

  • A blanket and pillows for games (yes, you can throw the pillows at the TV).
  • Sheets and a bedspread (for the kids, of course – unless you really love your team).
  • Banners (show your colors!).
  • Pajamas, fleeces, dresses (Sunday is church day too), whatever – use your imagination!

Take a closer look at our NFL fabrics and designs at http://www.jandofabrics.com/Category.aspx?ID=412493.  And yes, we have loads of Philadelphia Eagles material!

Here’s how to make a warm, no-sew polar fleece blanket:

1. Put two equal-sized fleeces on top of each other, lining up the edges so they are even. One side will be the front and the other side will be the back of the blanket.  Most people use a solid color for the back side, but you can use the same pattern on both sides – especially if it’s an NFL blanket for a big fan.

2. Trim off any selvage around the edges of each fleece.

3. Take a piece of 4″x4″ paper and lay it on the corner of your fleeces. Then carefully cut out the corner through both layers. Do this on all four corners.

4. Cut 4 inches into both fleeces at 1″ wide intervals. These are the “fringes” that will be tied together. Hint: lay a ruler or yardstick along the fabric to ensure that each fringe is 1” wide (but don’t worry if a fringe is a little bit less or more – no one will notice once they are tied).

5. Proceed to cut 1″ fringes on all four sides.

6. Tie every other pair of fringes around the entire blanket. Double knots generally hold up better in the wash.

7. Flip the whole blanket over and tie the remaining fringes.

Count on a couple of hours the first time you make one.  These are fun blankets to make with friends or children.
