The Bike Nut: 5 Cyclist-Friendly Fabrics

I’m Becky and I’m a bike nut. I’m a bike commuter and put about 80 miles on my bike every week, rain or shine. I’m also getting ready for a century in the end of September, which is a 100 mile race/ ride. I love my bike. I’m also a crafter though, and I like making things that are useful when it comes to my bike. I’ll be talking about crafts that pertain to biking, whether it be on the bike, off the bike, or just cool stuff that I’ve found. To get started, here’s a list of 5 useful fabrics when it comes to bikes.

1. Lycra. Surprise! Lycra/ spandex is the bread and butter of cycling clothing. It’s smooth to fight wind resistance, stretchy to form to your body, and breathable for when it gets sweaty.

2. Canvas. Hear me out here. Need a new seatpack or handlebar bag? Feeling adventurous and want to make a soft case for traveling with your bike? When it comes to light but sturdy, canvas is it.

3. Velcro. Ok, not exactly a fabric but indispensable when it comes to biking. Replace straps on shoes, fix your backpack strap, the list goes on and on.

4. Neoprene. This stuff is awesome for shoe covers, and has lots of uses for mountain biking when you think you’ll be getting wet.

5. Vinyl. A heavier- duty alternative to ripstop nylon, this is great for panniers. It’s also a great fabric for making accessories such as top-tube covers and handlebar bags.

So there’s 5 bike friendly fabrics. Stay tuned my fellow bike nuts!
