If your idea of fabric extends no further than the image of calicos for quilting, the applications being devised for fabric can serve as an awakening. Here’s a top five of amazing uses researchers are devising for fabrics:
1. Fabric Keyboards
This idea combines fun and functionality. Besides its fun look, the keyboard also doubles as a carrying case.
2. Camera Fabric
Researchers at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology have developed a mesh of light sensitive fibers that can collect images.
Start-up company Konarka is teaming up with the renowned Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne to create a fabric that can collect and store up to 4% of the solar energy that hits it.
These fascinating ties are 50% audio cassette tape. When rubbed with a tape head they “play” back jumbled sounds from the New York City metro system.
5. High Tech Ink
Xerox has introduced a new ink that can be used to print electronic circuitry on plastic and even fabrics.
