Ten of our Funniest Sewing Tip Responses

On our Facebook page we have a daily sewing tip. We fondly refer to it as our “Sewing Tip of the Day”.  We sit in a backroom, feverishly trying to come up with these tips. Occasionally, when we don’t feel inspired we scan the web aimlessly. Sometimes without much luck, while other times we are inspired and one thing leads to another. That’s the way it often happens once we place the tip of the day on Facebook. One thing leads to another, and another, and another. Here’s a sampling of those.

1. Sewing Tip of the Day: Keep your mind open. even we old dogs can still be taught new tricks.

Tess said:  Woof, Woof, Woof

2. Sewing Tip of the Day: Keep a little bit of steel wool close by for dull or rusty sewing needles.

Carol said: so does soaking them in Coca Cola, gets rid of the rust, then just rinse them clean and they are good as new. Pepsi does the job as well, just takes longer

3. Sewing Tip of the day: Bond your applique to your fabric with fusible webbing before you stitch! No more pucker.

Dina said: does this need to be a tip? Do people really not know this??????

4. Sewing Tip of the Day:Leave a length of thread in a needle before storing it in a pincushion. Can’t tell you how many of mine have been sucked into the sea of no return!

Sylvia said: I have used the same pin cushion for over 50 years! I recently spent an evening and extracted over 100 needles!

5. Sewing Tip of the Day: Bored with your wardrobe? Replace the buttons.

Eldonna said: That might work, but buttons are the bane of my sewing!

6. Sewing Tip of the Day: You don’t have to use your ironing board for just ironing. Adjust the height to use for added work space when needed.

Jennifer said: I do this all the time but then when I need to iron it is such pain to clear everything away!

Karoline said: Me too, Jennifer! I need a second ironing board for ironing. LOL

7. Sewing Tip of the Day: Don’t forget to use the seam guide on your machines plate. If the measurement you need isn’t there, simply use masking tape as your guide.

Carol Ann said: I don’t even think I realized what the numbers were until after years of sewing! It was a BIG DUH?! moment for me : )

8. Sewing tip of the Day: When pulling elastic through your casing use the biggest safety pin you can.

Joan said: I pulled the elastic ALL the way through only once…. pinned it after that. 🙂

9. Sewing Tip of the Day: Cars are to men what sewing machines are to seamstresses. Take the time to oil, clean, and keep the engine running smooth!

Cynthia said: Amen to that!

10. Sewing Tip of the Day: I always stack my fabric by color, even my scraps are in drawers according to color.

Betty said: Man am I ever unorganized!
