Ask Netfah: Which Plastic Vinyl Gauge Is Best for My Project?
I am covering my sitting room sofas with a clear plastic vinyl and was not sure what gauge was best suited for the job. I have seen thicknesses ranging from 10-30 online, but am still not sure. Please advise.
Dear Perplexed About Plastic,
Your inquiry is a common one for crafters looking to cover or design anything from outdoor furniture and outerwear, to boat cushions and indoor furnishings. In your case, a good thickness or weight as some people call it, is 12-16 gauge. This size will offer you a durable enough material that is still pliable and easy to sew or heat bond. Remember, the higher the gauge number on clear plastic vinyl, the thicker it is.

What is a UFAC classification?
There are two UFAC ratings: 1 and 2. UFAC class 1 means that a fabric meets the flammability criteria of the UFAC when in contact with polyurethane foam. UFAC class 2 fabrics are those that do not meet the flammability criteria and must be used in conjunction with a flame retardant material between the fabric and the foam.
J&O Fabrics: The Return of Crushed Velvet!
Across the centuries velvet has retained its allure as a rich and opulent fabric available only to the privileged. In earlier times only royalty and nobility could afford to garment themselves in the pristigeous material. An expensive process requiring more yarns and more steps to create, velvet is a type of woven tufted fabric in which the cut threads are very easily distributed with a short dense pile giving it a distinctive look and feel.
Update Your Home Decor with Bright Colors from J&O
Be bold and add some color to your home decor to welcome in spring and summer. One way to get rid of the winter doldrums is to replace drab decorative elements with vibrant color. While element such as wall decorations, window treatments, and other accessories are important in this blog we will focus on how upholstery fabrics can brighten a room’s decor.
Choosing the right fabric requires taken into account not only the color of the fabric but the texture as well. For instance chenille fabrics are soft and tend to have a warm, inviting texture, while bark cloths are stiffer and more vibrant in appearance. Depending on what your aim is you can find a fabric with both the right color and texture.
Consumer Savvy Carol: Nurture Your Creativity With J&O.
In these economically uncertain times, our survival skills kick in and our natural response is to cut back, cut out and hold our breath while the nightly news reports on yet another mass lay off of jobs. We join the ever growing population of stressed out worker bees and me-myself-and-I clones in the competitive rat race called ‘life’, who find truth in the encouraged notion that it is survival of the fittest, with no rest for the weary. It is a delusional and vicious spiral of continuous fear based responses that chip away at the ‘reality’ of what it means to be alive.
THE FABULOUS FABRICS OF LIFE
Since I was able to spell my name, I have been drawing. I would sketch for hours, just disappearing into myself. Consumed by the look and feel of fabric, I would sketch images of women in clothing of my designs, right down to the microscopic details of their trim. From the recesses of my imagination, would come creations inspired by the world around me. I would absorb beauty from the swaying trees and the still flowers. I would soak in ideas from the sun and the rain. The simplicity and perfection of my ideal perspective uplifted and inspired me over and over again till I had created my own little world of splendor around me. Fire, water, earth, air and most of all LOVE, were the elemental canvas from which I drew upon and nurtured into each piece of art that would become the portfolio of my intimate relationship with fabric, fashion and mother earth.
