As a fabric lover who also works at a fabric store, I am privy to not only the latest and hottest top shelf fabrics as soon as they come off the truck, but a plethora of textiles that I may not normally have come in contact with along my journey. From popular new novelty cotton prints for 2011, to elegant mid-century Maharam decorator designs, if you were to ask me to list my favorite, it might just take a few days. But such a question shouldn’t go to waste , and so the crew at J&O Fabric Store decided to let our curiosity be fed as we posed this poll to our fabulous facebook fans. Afterall, knowing what our craft customers like most, gives us an idea of which fabrics we should purchase more of to keep our customers satisfied. With so many fabric-holics as fans of our J&O facebook page, it didn’t take any time at all for the feedback to start pouring in. From faux furs and brocades to Michael Miller and Amy Butler, the selection was as diverse as the people who voiced them.

Virtual Fabric…Imagine That!
As a fabric specialist, advise columnist, researcher and writer for J&O Fabric Store, I spend a great deal of time searching the internet , reading books, reviewing articles, and exploring the world of textile goods to find out what’s old, what’s new, and what we can look forward to in the industry down the line. And while most of the information I come across is more mainsteam than not, every once and a while I stumble on a study that really excites me. One such study that caught my attention was conducted out of John Moores University in Liverpool. The aim of this project was to develop an intuitive visual and haptic communication system using the standards and expectations of the textile and related industries with particular regard to professional aesthetic, and psychological perspectives, and the working methods of the industry; then to create a resource tool (in this case, the Logitech Wingman mouse) in order to bring the benefits of such capabilities to the buyer or consumer. In laments terms, researchers brainstormed ways to make the look and feel of fabric more tangible when viewed over digital devices such as computers.

THE FABULOUS FABRICS OF LIFE
Since I was able to spell my name, I have been drawing. I would sketch for hours, just disappearing into myself. Consumed by the look and feel of fabric, I would sketch images of women in clothing of my designs, right down to the microscopic details of their trim. From the recesses of my imagination, would come creations inspired by the world around me. I would absorb beauty from the swaying trees and the still flowers. I would soak in ideas from the sun and the rain. The simplicity and perfection of my ideal perspective uplifted and inspired me over and over again till I had created my own little world of splendor around me. Fire, water, earth, air and most of all LOVE, were the elemental canvas from which I drew upon and nurtured into each piece of art that would become the portfolio of my intimate relationship with fabric, fashion and mother earth.
From ‘Railroad’ to ‘Repeat’. The Real Way to Figure out How Many Yards of Fabric You Need.
For most professionals who have been in the fabric and upholstery business for a number of years, the terms ‘railroaded’ and ‘repeat’ are as common as a materials’ ‘look’ and ‘feel’. But for the novice, these words can have us frantically searching our fabric dictionaries and web resources looking for a quick description that could save our pockets from unnecessary spending and the purchase of excess yardage.
