What Does Your Fabric Say About You?

As a crafter I find myself drawn to certain color schemes time-and-time again. I prefer cheery, vintage-inspired prints. If I’m looking for a solid color I’m often drawn to blues, greens, and pinks–cool colors. I’ll occasionally venture out of my comfort zone and wear a bright red or orange–warm colors. Oftentimes I prefer more muted shades. So, what does your fabric say about you? Check out some of the prints I’ve profiled below and see which one suits you best!

My question is simple. What is madras fabric?

Dear Simple in Seattle,

It is funny you should ask that, as I just recently found out myself. Madras is a fabric often reflective of a colorful checked patterned material. It is typically worn as a summer fabric, as it is 100% cotton, making it both lightweight and absorbent. Gaining its name from its traditional place of origin in Mandras, India; the patchwork styled material is often used to make shorts, capris, dresses and tops. For a fashionable look and comfort during the summer seasons, madras remains an in-style fabric year after year.

With summer speeding by at a seemingly rapid pace, and the seasonal sun shining as bright as ever, keeping cool and looking stylish under the pressure can become a tricky affair…until now.

Look on the racks at most of your upscale, downtown or urban retail fashion chains and you will see florals, stripes, loud colors, muted hues; all designed to entice you into a sale that may look cool and refreshing, but wind up being uncomfortably hot and frustratingly hard to care for.
