As our Facebook Fan page continues to grow, more and more of our crafty customers are showing off their cool creations for our J&O family and community to view, share and comment on. One such fan is Karen Jordan of Jenny’s Angels, a line of custom made aprons and christening outfits designed in honor of Karen’s best friend Jenny who passed awaiting a kidney transplant. For Karen, all babies are angels, and since her line is named for Jen, a portion of every design sold is donated to the American Diabetes Foundation in her name . Jenny also loved butterflies, so on all of Karen’s custom christening gown designs there is a butterfly somewhere. Since Karen is a religious follower of our J&O Fabrics acebook page, she is constantly replenishing her fabric stock with cool prints from our store and has this to say about our fabulous collection of Michael Miller prints and more…

eBay: A Controversial Giant
eBay is known the world over as an auction website where shoppers go to find great deals. Books, cds, clothes, novelty fabric and even automobiles are regularly sold online. In reality, eBay has changed the way consumers shop for even basic goods. How many times have you been at the store and thought “I could get that cheaper on eBay”?
- “I can get that cheaper on eBay!”
Wild West Fabrics from Alexander Henry
One of the most striking aspects of Alexander Henry’s fabrics is how different they are from anything else on the market. While other fabric mills purchase expensive licenses to produce fabrics with familiar images, Alexander Henry’s fabric designs seem to be shaped by pure imagination and a delight of what can be depicted on fabric. The designs of this Burbank, California based mill can be counted on to display imaginative designs printed on high quality cotton. Just as their website announces, Alexander Henry’s prints are truly the “fabric of imagination”.

What’s going on with novelty fabric prices? Is Walmart to Blame?
Much to the chagrin of quilters and other fabric enthusiasts prices for fabric are on the rise as never before. Furthermore, a number of well-respected mills have gone out of business reducing the selection of novelty fabrics. If you have felt the pinch you may very well have asked whyprices are on the rise now. In a previous blog we outlined how manufacturers blame their elevated prices on the cost of the “grey goods” they print on. This trickles down to customers who pay more for the fabrics from said mills. Nevertheless, there is more to the question than the cost of “grey goods”. The absence of Wal-Mart in the fabric industry has been a contributing factor in shutting down some mills and encouraging others to raise their prices. How so?

What is Kona Cotton?
Can you tell if something is exotic just by its name? Luau, aloha, kahuna and other words are reminders of far-flung places by their mere sound and the associations they convey. Kona is such a word. With it you can almost see imposing Hawaiian volcanoes, clear turquoise waters and resplendent tropical birds. But the questions remains: what exactly is kona cotton?
Kona is a trademarked 100% cotton broadcloth made by Robert Kaufman, a premier novelty fabric mill. Kona cotton was introduced by the company in the 1980s in response to the rapidly growing quilting industry. The thread count for kona cotton is 60 by 60. This high thread count is what allows kona cotton to balance durability with a soft hand and light weight.
What is Pima Cotton?
At J&O most of our extensive selection of fabrics is comprised of cotton textiles. You may have noticed that a number of these are specifically pima cotton fabrics. So the question is: what is pima cotton?
Pima cotton is also known as Sea Island, Egyptian and Extra Long Staple and is produced by the pima cotton plant (Gossypium barbadense). Pima cotton gets its name from the Pima Indians who helped raise the cotton on USDA farms in the American Southwest in the early 1900s. Pima cotton is particularly appreciated for its resilience and durability. Some manufacturers of pima cotton goods even claim that their goods last up to 50% longer.
