Ask Netfah: Fireproofing Fabric for Fire Code Regulations

Dear Netfah,

As a manufacturer of  custom made banquet and commercial seating, I am required by law to upholster my chairs in material that meets fire code standards. Unfortunately more often than not, I run into the issue of trying to locate fabric that is already  fire proof. And while some are flame retardant, regulations require flame resistancy. I have heard that there is a fire proofing spray that works on almost any fabric and meets code requirements. Do you have any recommendations?

Dear Rob,

Ask Netfah: The Do’s & Don’ts of Fire Retarding on Fabric

Dear Netfah,

I am working on the production team for our schools annual spring show and because of certain fire code regulations, I need to use a material for the backdrop that is fire retardant. I am having trouble locating material that is already pre-treated and have been told to just purchase regular fabric and treat it with a spray retardant so it will pass regulation. My question is this, what is the best source of treatment? And once I wash the treated material, does the application wash off?

Cow Urine: The Raw & Organic Fire Retardant.

I once read on old folk story about a group of holy sages in India who spent their lives creating havans and doing spiritual work for their Creator. Because of this sacred purifying fire ritual, they wore protective garb made from textiles dyed in cows urine to make the fabric fire retardant and fire repellent. In order to create a urine with these properties, the sages practiced a protocol of keeping the cows hungry for a few days and feeding them only fresh mango leaves. Afterwards, the first urine collected was used to dye the selected fabric. Now, I’ve heard of fire retardant applications and even used fire retardant spray myself, but cow urine as a fire retardant, now that is news to me!
