J&O Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week: (May 2-8th)

“Teach the children so that it will not be necessary to teach the adults.”

-Abraham Licoln

May 2-8th, 2010 is National Teacher’s Appreciation Week, a time set aside to reflect and appreciate our educators then and now, as well as to show just how much we value their service to the academic and creative advancement of not only our children, but us as well.

J&O Celebrates National Autism Awareness Month!

April is National Autism Awareness Month, a time when special attention is given to this fascinating yet challenging neurological dis-ease affecting more and more children each year. Once viewed by society as a disorder of the mind, and a form of either mental retardation or schizophrenia, researchers and psychologists are discovering more about the nature of the dis-ease and dismantling the falsehoods of what was once believed. Still somewhat of a mystery, access to the world-wide web has proven to be a great benefit not only to those who are challenged by the dis-ease themselves, but caretakers, parents and society overall.

J&O Fabric Award of the Week: Alice In Wonderland!

While Tim Burton’s 2010 version of the infamous 1865 novel by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson is nothing less than an acid trip down memory lane for many who remember the fancied tale from their childhood of a little girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar and anthropomorphic creatures. And while many renditions have made their way onto the big screen, between the hard covers of a book, and into the hearts of both the young and the old, there is no timeless treasure quite like this one.

Ask Netfah: Recreating the ‘Muppet Dress’.

Dear Netfah,

My daughter was quite taken by the “Muppet dress” worn by Katy Perry last year. We have been searching for the dress, or the fabric so we could make the dress but to no avail. She is considering a novelty Beatles squares fabrics Yellow or Before the Wizard she saw on http://www.jofabrics.com/. This would be for a prom dress (short, party style, satin band trim). What are your thoughts?

Thanks so much
Stephanie from Nova Scotia

Dear Stephanie from Nova Scotia,

For The Love Of the Game!

What does infidelity and golf have in common? Nothing much really unless you are human, or the seemingly super human Tiger Woods who shares his love for the “game” of golf and more. And by “game”, I don’t just mean the one he plays on the course.

While Tigers game is somewhat unique on one level, it is nothing shy of common on another; yet some people don’t seem to want to accept that as a reality in our society, especially from those who hold positions as role models or as public figures. Some would even go as far as to say that it is simply un-natural for a man or woman to not only be attracted to more than one person at the same time, but to respond to that attraction and pull from within. Both urges which of course, are deemed unacceptable by our socialized standards.

The Journey to the White House Quilt

In June 2008, while watching a history making event on television, Dr Joan Gaither found herself reflecting on the man on her screen standing before millions as he pleaded to the nation to be the change we are all looking for. Inspired by his success, she began stitching a quilt that would one day take us along the long yet triumphant political journey of a young man starting from Honolulu Hawaii and culminating at the steps of the White House less than six months later as the 45th President of the United States.

That man…..Barack Obama.
