Imagine a movie in which there was no scenery, or your favorite television drama without a setting. So it goes with theatrical productions, where scenery can be everything. Despite its importance scenery can also be virtually anything, from just a chair to elaborately painted backdrops.
The modern focus on scenery can be traced back to the Italian opera buffa (comic opera) of the 18th century. Intricate plots were matched with equally detailed sets which helped convey both setting and action.
A little over a year ago we posted a blog about the wonders of gauze fabric as a summer material. And while we still agree that there is no fabric as lightweight, breathable, absorbant or fashionable as this ancient textile good for the lazy hazy days of summer, we are truly loving the newer double gauze cotton for its added non-transparent feature. Invented by the Japanese with the intent of curing just that, while still allowing the same desirable qualities of the fabric to remain, double gauze is the answer to all our ‘staying-cool-and-cute-in-the-summer’ woes.

I am attending a 1950’s themed party in September and wanted to try my hand at making one of the fun poodle skirts from my youth. My only problem is I don’t want to use any felt. While it looks and works great for the garment, I just really never liked it that much. Any suggestions for an alternative fabric that will hang and flow the same way?

We are in the planning stages of our school’s annual Christmas play here in Morristown, Tennessee and are in need of black material that we can use to act as a backdrop. The space we are trying to cover is pretty large (appx. 50’w x 20’ h) and we are having a hard time finding a light weight material that is also non-transparent. We saw your black felt on line and wondered if that was a recommended fabric for what we have in mind?
