I often jab that I am ‘No Martha Stewart’…but this simple no-sew suede skirt tutorial from her website is doable! According to her website, if you can sew a button, you can make this suede skirt. Want to find out? Simply order suede fabric here and get started!
For the neat scalloped edging, they traced an oatmeal canister! Fabulous!
You will need:
• Suede fabric or sturdy fabric such as denim
• 1 ¾ yards total (for a skirt larger than a 7-8, you will need 2 yards of fabric)
• Fabric marker
• 32-ounce oatmeal container for scalloped edges
• Needle
• Thread
• Button
Microfiber suede, or ultra-suede is recommended for this project
What to do:
• Follow the pattern template from Martha Stewart
• Pro-tip: Create the pattern using muslin and finish with suede
• Fold 1 ¾ yards of 45” wide muslin in half. Mark 10 inches up on the folded edge from the lower right hand corner and draw a convex curved line to the lower left hand corner
• Mark a spot 39 inches up from the bottom, on the edge
• From your mark, draw a convex curved line to the upper right hand corner, the other folded edge
• Cut out on the lines, rounding the lower left hand corner
• Wrap around your waist to ensure a proper fit. There should be an overlap of 9-10 inches. If there is not, repeat the first step with a deeper curve from the bottom end.
• Once the fit is correct, grab the oatmeal can and trace shallow scallops along the top. Cut edge through both layers at waist. Fold back top layer and trace scallops around one end. Wrap around waist to overlap, let scallop end drape.
• Use finished muslin pattern and pin to suede fabric, marking with chalk
• Cut out pattern carefully on suede fabric
• Mark closure spot on bottom layer with pin. Sew button onto this spot. Snip a small buttonhole.
The skirt graced the cover of Martha’s Blueprint magazine, along with a special episode (you can find a video on her website, should you wish to make this adorable skirt).
