Choosing the proper sewing needle for the task is as important as having the right chef’s knives in the kitchen. Not only is it important that it is sharp, the type can make or break a project! Sewing needle sizes can be a bit confusing, use the chart and tips below for help!
Needle sizes are shown in both American and European. You will see the size indicated on the package. Use the chart above to understand conversions.
Needles may appear simple and they all look the same unless you know what you are looking for! Needles possess varying tips–shanks, grooves and eyes (the hole where the thread goes) that can all behave differently with your machine.
When it comes to your sewing needles, size does matter. Making sure you have the right styles and sizes will make all of the difference in your finished crafts and clothing.
American sizes range from 8-19, with 8 being the smallest and finest and 19 the thickest and most durable offering. European numbers range from 60-120, with 60 being the finest. The way numbers are displayed will depend on the manufacturing company, as some will list American first and some European. This makes it important to know both! Remember that the smaller the needle, the smaller the eye will be.
Pro-tip: Always test first on a scrap fabric to ensure success
There are a variety of needle types and specialty options out there. Most machines are good with a universal needle, and that will work just fine with most fabrics and projects. If you are working with a specialty fabric or especially thick fabric, seek out a needle capable of handling the job. Share your favorite needle brands and types with us on J&O Fabrics Facebook page!
