If your collection of tunes is sprawling around the house and vehicles at an alarming rate, try this cool CD pocket craft to regain control of your population of artists! Warning: Due to our extensive variety of fabrics, it may be more difficult to select a print style for your CD case than it was to choose an album!
The finished product holds 6 discs and is 5 ½” X 7. You can add or subtract the number of pockets to meet your needs.
You will need:
• 29 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ pieces of fabric
• Thread in a complimentary shade
• Thick fusible interfacing, cardboard or batting
• Sewing machine
• Scissors, rotary cutter and mat
• Ruler
• Straight pins
• Iron
What to do:
1. Cut one piece of each size from your fabric:
• (A) 8 1/2 x 12 1/2 (This will be the back)
• (B) 8 x 12 ½
• (C) 7 x 12 1/2
• (D) 6 x 12 1/2 (This will be the front)
2. Join B, C & D with a simple hem along one side. Fold and press ¼” along the length of each, then fold and press 1” to form the hem.
3. Sew the bottom edge of the hem on the wrong side as close to the edge as you can. Optional: Stitch along the top for a crisper edge
4. Create the pocket seams: Place B over A with the right sides facing up and the bottoms lined up. Mark parallel 4” lines from the top of B to the bottom, these will be where the pockets are formed.
5. Now place C over B and mark line again 4” from the top of C. Sew A, B & C together
6. Place D on top of all others
7. Pin layers all together to join the right sides, fold in half and pin again to ensure the hemmed edges are aligned evenly
8. Sew from the bottom right corner using 5/8” allowance across the bottom, raw edge and about ¼ of the way across the top. Be sure to leave space for turning!
9. Turn right side out. If you feel your pockets are not tight enough, turn inside out again and sew along the edge of the folded side
10. Cut interfacing to fit inside pocket, then roll and stuff into pocket and iron until nice and flat, folding in the raw edges. Sew along the entire top along the very edge and you are finished! Now you have an attractive way to transport and store your music collection!
