Retro Fashion Never Dies

Novelty Fabric - Retro Fabric RunwayThe television, music and fashion industries influenced 1970s fashion with starlets like Farrah Fawcett, Diana Ross and Janice Dickinson.  While the era’s icons have left the spotlight, their influence lives on in the fashions we see today.  We love playing with the novelty fabrics that were so popular in the 1970s.  Here’s a peek at fashion trends that mimic that retro look and feel.

1970s Retro Revival

There’s no better way to make a fashion-forward statement than by going back in time, and the fashion industry has taken note.  From New York to Milan, the spring trend continues with vintage flair. Brilliant colors, mod shapes and bold, contrasting colors were reported on the fall 2011 runways.

Fashion Week Inspirations – Fall 2011

It’s crazy to think – the clothing that designers show in spring doesn’t appear in magazines and stores until August. It takes that long for buyers to make selections and get their manufacturing plants in gear. It’s anyone’s guess exactly what the season’s big hit will be, but we think the following trends look especially nostalgic.

1)   Short shorts/hot pants – Fashion busting in their time, many a girl was sent home from school for wearing hot pants. In today’s fashion, leather shorts are quickly becoming a fall wardrobe staple. Try constructing a pair of shorts with smooth suede. Pair them with opaque tights and platform shoes, and you’ll be set to rise to the top of your class.

2)   Cut-outs For clubs and after-party soirees, unusual cutouts in clothing made an appearance on the runway. Why not show off some skin without feeling too exposed? It’s a cool, confident style anyone can pull off as long as you keep in mind that everyone was laid back in the 70s.

3)   Bold, pointed collars – This may only work on the east or west coasts, or maybe on the character Kurt from popular TV series Glee. But if you feel you have the flair to pull this off, the Barrymore collar is a fashion-forward accent that’s sure to bring panache to a tired wardrobe. If you prefer an understated vintage look, Peter Pan collars and shirt-waist dresses made their appearance on the runways as well.

4)   Prints – If funky fabrics are your thing, anything goes.  From dynamic stripes to super-fly African queen, your imagination is your only limit in creating a super sassy outfit for the fall season.
