Summer is the time when communities come together most. Everyone is out on their porches and in parks; there is less hustle and bustle to get from door to door without a wicked winter wind blowing; time seems to slow down just enough to be able to do all that catching up with your neighbors that you have been meaning to do during the colder months.
In a growing number of communities around the country, this closeness has resulted in the making of community patchwork quilts. Families, organizations, and groups of friends make their own part of the quilt incorporating whatever they want into it to make it their own. Names, dates, crests, and bits of baby clothes are just a few of the things that are sewn into the squares. When all parties are accounted for and all of the squares have been collected, the quilt is sewn together by volunteers. The finished quilts are usually either displayed in the city hall, a school, or passed around from house to house.
