Thought webbing tape was only good for upholstery projects? These purse accessories are made from small pieces of burlap upholstery webbing usually sold in fabric shops and sometimes in hardware stores. The color combination usually consists of a jute colored webbing with either red or blue stitched bands, but it’s durability is undeniable and at appx $1.25/yd, you can’t beat the price. ADDRESS COVER BOOK
Materials
- 9″ length 3 1/2″ wide burlap upholstery webbing tape
- coordinating thread
- miniature address book with flexible cover (2 1/4″ w x 3 1/4″ h and less than 1/8″ thick)
Instructions
- Fold each cut end of tape under 1/2″.
- Whiptstitch ends to tape without going through to the right side.
- Fold edges under 1 1/4″ and test to see if unit comfortably wraps address book without warping cover.
- Whipstitch finished edges of overlapped upholstery tape at top and bottom to form pockets.
- Insert cover of address book into pockets.
ZIPPERED BAG
Materials
- 2 (8 1/4″ l x 3 1/2″ w) burlap upholstery webbing tape w/ coordinating thread
- 7 1/2″ square fabric for lining
- 7″ all-purpose zipper
Instructions
- Place closed zipper, right side up on work surface.
- Baste one long edge of one length of upholstery tape right side up, on each side of zipper
- Stitch along each side of zipper, 1/16″ from edge of tape
- With right sides of upholstery tape facing one another with zipper closed, fold in half down the length of the zipper.
- Machine-stitch side edges of strips together 1/2″ from each edge leaving the bottom unstitched.
- Flatten seam allowances and whipstitch to bag.
- Open zipper leaving the wrong side out.
- To prepare the lining, press (2) opposite edges under 1/4″ so that piece measures 7″ x 7 1/2″.
- With right sides facing and raw edges aligned.
- Fold lining in half with long sides together.
- Stitch short raw ends 1/4″ from edge.
- Turn right side out.
- With wrong sides facing one another, align side seams of lining with upholstery tape, place the upholstery tape unit inside lining
- Slipstitch lining to zipper tape approximately 1″ on each side of side seam.
- Turn bag right side out.
- Push lining inside bag
- Slipstitch lining to zipper tape.
- Whipstitch finished edges of upholstery tape at bottom of bag.
EYEGLASS CASE
Materials
- 3 7/8″ x 12 1/2″ piece of fabric lining
- 14 1/2″ l x 3 1/2″ w burlap upholstery webbing tape w/ thread to match
- 3 3/8″ x 12 3/4″ piece of thing batting or felt
Instructions
- Press both long ends of lining fabric under 1/4″
- With right sides facing and long folded ends of lining approximately 1/16″ inside finished edges of upholstery tape, align (1) short raw end of lining with (1) short raw end of upholstery tape (webbing).
- Machine stitch short ends together, 1/4″ from edge
- Repeat with other short ends
- Turn resulting uneven piece right side out
- With lining side up, flatten unit so that there is 1/2″ border of upholstery tape on each end.
- Slide layer of batting between lining and upholstery tape.
- Align edges and baste batting to lining close to edge
- Pull lining unit away from upholstery tape
- Fold ling, batting sides together, and whipstitch edges of lining together
- Tuck lining inside upholstery tape
- Align top folded ends and finished side edges of upholstery tape
- Whipstitch finished edges together leaving top open.
COIN PURSE
Materials
- 10 1/2″ l x 3 1/2″ w burlap upholstery webbing tape w/ thread to match
- 4″ x 7 3/8″ scrap fabric for lining
- (3) 1/2″ w velcro dots
Instructions
- With right sides facing, center and align one short raw end of upholstery tape on one short raw end of lining tape ( lining will extend 1/4″ beyond each of the long finished edges of tape).
- Machine-stitch short ends together 1/4″ from edge.
- Repeat with the other short ends
- Turn resulting uneven constructed piece right side out.
- Referring to (figure A), flatten and fold unit.
- Center and stitch looped velcro dot halves across top of flap on the lining
- Turn unit over to upholstery tape side
- Referring to (figure B), center and stitch the remaining velcro dot halves in place on the opposite edge
- Turn the unit over to the lining side again.
- Fold under each long edge of lining 1/4″ and baste stitch to upholstery tape
- Starting at the top of the flap on one side, stitch open edges together by first whipstitching one upholstery tape to the other upholstery tape along the flap and then slipstitching lining to upholstery tape allowing edge of tape to extend slightly beyond lining.
- Repeat on other side
- Fold lower portion of purse up 3 1/4″ along the fold line so that lining is on inside
- Securely whipstitch finished edges of upholstery tape together to form pocket
- Fold flap down 1 3/4″ along folding line.
- Align velcro dots and close.
