Quell Quilting Quandaries

Figuring out all of the ins and outs of quilting can seem overbearing. However, with the right resources, getting started is simple! We at J&O have taken the time to compile our top three books and blogs as well as provide some inspiration via novelty fabric!

Our Favorite Books:

1. Quilting For Dummies

The “For Dummies” series is popular for a reason. There are awesome picture examples from the very beginning to help you figure out exactly what you want to make, and then follows up with detailed instructions on how to make it. The other little thing that we like about this book is that is has a list of additional “fun reads,” informational books, and inspirational magazines. Even if you glance at some of the suggested further reading, you will get a better idea of what the quilting community is all about (and how awesome it is).

2. Quilting 101: A Beginners Guide To Quilting

This is the book for you if you are brand new to quilting and need to brush up a little on your sewing skills. Every minute detail of the process is explained from the features of a sewing machine to actually constructing a quilt. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow and act as a fantastic starting point for hesitant beginners.

3. 200 Quilting Tips, Techniques & Trade Secrets: An Indispensable Reference of Technical Know- How and Troubleshooting Tips

The title is a mouth full but it does say it all! This guide is a healthy balance between down and dirty, and detailed. If you want or need to know something, the answer will not only be in this book, but it will also be succinct and easy to find.

Our Favorite Blogs:

1. Time For Quilting

We could probably write an entire blog post about why Time For Quilting is amazing but that is not the goal at the moment. In synopsis, this blog has a ton of information about quilting as well as the quilting community and ways that you can get involved with it (from quilting cruises to simply getting a pattern). If that wasn’t enough, there are also cookie recipes listed in the menu. They had us at pecan chip.

2. One Block Only Beginner Quilting

If it is practical advice you seek, this is the blog that you want to spend time reading. The author’s practical approach is to help newcomers to the quilting world overcome the common pitfalls that often befall those who are new to this craft. Humor and good advice are common as well as handy sections for beginner patterns and projects.

3. Quilt Dad

Getting the basics down is really only half of the quilting process. The other half is being inspired! When it comes to that front, our favorite place to go for innovation in quilting is Quilt Dad. His patterns are fresh and funky and not what you would typically expect from a 36 year old father of three!

Our Favorite Novelty Fabrics:

This is a list of our favorite sources for novelty fabric as well as fabric inspiration!

1. Yes, we know we are incredibly biased but J&O does have one of the best selections of novelty fabric on the market. At the moment, we are particularly partial to our outstanding collection of  college team fabric. Tis the season!

2. While Craft Gossip does not have a list of fabric for sale, they do have some awesome inspirational novelty fabric under their ‘Quilting’ and ‘Sewing’ tabs.

3. Yes, they are competition but we still have to give major props to Curioux Disorder for their awesome novelty fabrics. They have a lot of really unique fabrics that caught our eye immediately.
