Looking for a really great way to preserve your precious pattern pieces? Have a roll of old, lightweight, fusible interfacing just waiting to be put to use? Whether woven or non-woven, here’s a cool way to turn your less than impressive interfacing into pattern piece additions that strengthen and preserve at the same time!
Step 1:
To start, pull out a piece of non woven fusible interfacing and a piece of tissue pattern paper to test. Cut your interfacing so that it is only slightly larger than your tissue paper piece, then iron together. Keep your iron on the STEAM OFF setting only.
Step 2:
Once you’ve tested the two for harmonious paring, start placing your interfacing under your tissue pattern pieces with the STICKY SIDE UP. Remember to make sure the STEAM SETTING ON YOUR IRON IS OFF before you do though so you won’t destroy your cherished tissue paper by shrinking it or rippling and distorting its shape.
Step 3:
Iron the interfacing to your tissue pattern until they fuse together to form one layered pattern piece. If you are nervous about getting the glue from the interfacing on your iron, place a press cloth between the iron and your pattern piece.
While this tip tends to work best for single-size patterns, a lightweight interfacing will offer pliability, added softness, and an easily penetrating surface for pin placement, adjusted sizing and repeated use.
Try this tip with muslin or wax baking paper instead of interfacing to strengthen your fragile tissue patterns. We’d love to hear how they work for you.
Hope this tip was a helpful one for making your pattern pieces live on!
