My First Sewing Machine Project

When I was 7 or 8 I spent many hours at my Mother’s sisters house. My Aunt had four boys and she was a very domestic women.  She loved to cook and sew unlike her sister who only liked having things done for her. She also liked having a little girl around to teach these things to.

We would spend hours talking about her teen years and what a brat my mother had been as a younger sister. All the while, without knowing it I was gaining wisdom. What I did know very clearly was that I was learning to sew. My first project was a patternless apron made for my Mom.

Of course I didn’t realize the irony, sarcasm and humor in the fact that I, at only 7 years of age was sewing an apron for my mother who hated everything domestic. Fifty years later I find it hysterically funny. Back to why I’m here….

Recently we asked about first projects on your sewing machine on our Facebook page. The majority of answers were Barbie clothes. Skirts, and Pillows. So I got to thinking about my first project and if I did it now what fabric would I use? What fabric would you use if you did your first project again?

Here are a few choices I would make.
