As an only child, I grew up in a household where every craft that I ever made was kept and treasured. This is especially true for the holiday decorations that I crafted. Every year, my mother hangs up the little felt wreath I decorated in the fourth grade. I often give her a hard time about it and remind her that I am now an adult so she should probably stop putting it up. However, the truth is, I love that she has kept it all of these years and still thinks to put it in a prominent place during the holidays. Help your kids create their own memories with these Hanukkah kid’s crafts.
Fabric Dreidel
Perfect For: the baby
Babies need to get into the holiday season too! By using craft felt and other seasonally colored fabric, you can create a fun, safe toy for a baby to cuddle up with during naps or play with while mom and dad are busy cooking and cleaning. Pick the fabric to go along with the rest of your holiday decorations, your child’s favorite onesie, or the color of his or her room. You can even make a few that compliment each other so you can switch them in and out when one inevitably gets dirty. Click the picture below to get linked to the full how-to.
Fabric Menorah
Perfect For: Ages 3- 13
As kids get older, projects get a bit more complicated and as a result, a lot more awesome. If you have a younger kid doing this one and you don’t trust them with a needle and thread just yet, I would recommend tracing out the materials for this project, letting your child cut them out, and then sewing it together yourself. If you do feel as though your little one can handle sewing this on their own, this is a great beginners project for them to learn with. It is not too difficult and the fact that it is a holiday craft makes it tons of fun. In regard to materials, make sure that you have a strong base fabric so if you have to pull out botched beginner’s stitches it won’t cause too much damage. We recommend using something sturdy like canvas fabric.
Felt Gelt Bag
Perfect For: Ages 6- 15
Gelt Bags are just one of the age old traditions attached to Hanukkah. Whether you are filling up the bags with money or chocolate coins, this is certainly a very important parcel. We recommend using felt because it is one of the easiest fabrics for kids to work with and it allows for a lot of creativity in regard to decorations. You can glue, sew, and write (with fabric pens of course) all over that fabric and get a really good looking result. The same sewing rules apply to this bag as they did to the fabric menorah above: if you are comfortable letting your child sew it, let them have at it. This is a fantastic starter project.
We hope you try out some of these crafts with your kids this holiday season. Make sure that you post pictures of holiday crafts that you have tried and love on our Facebook page. Who knows, you might see it in one of our next blog posts!
