J&O Fabric Store Fun Fall Craft: Easy School Pouch

At J&O Fabric Store we are always thinking of new fun crafts for the season.  For this fall we have an easy-peasy school pouch to make.  Since most of us are caught in the back to school rush, this is a great craft to do with your children. Taking a few moments from the daily rush with your kids will also provide you with time to talk about the upcoming school year. So why not give it a chance.  You can make a fun craft and work on it with your special loved ones.

This clear pouch is a must for anyone who goes to school or has a job.  Who doesn’t need a place to store all those items that just get lost in your bag or your drawer?  And you can make it in any size, add a picture pocket and off you go!

Supplies Needed to make this incredible  Clear School Pouch:

1. Clear Plastic Vinyl: 10 Gauge

2. Pinking Shears

3. Ruler or baggie

4. Velcro cut to size

Now that you have all your supplies ready you are all set to start your project.  Below I will provide step by step instructions with pictures so you can follow along the way.  Remember if you have any questions please email us at info@jandofabrics.com and we can help you during any step.

Step 1: Rest your plastic baggie in place on a solid service sitting on top of 2 layers of clear vinyl and trace it to size, I used a thin “Sharpie”

Step 2: Now your clear plastic vinyl will have a black outline from tracing the plastic bag.  On the clear vinyl, cut on the Sharpie line with your pinking shears. You will cut the two sides and the bottom cut with the pinking shears. Cut the top (the area you leave open,) with scissors or a rotary cutter.   Also, cut a pocket from what is left from your clear vinyl, if desired. (make sure the size is less than the size of the full clear plastic vinyl you just cut out)

Step 3: Sew each velcro piece to the top of the bag on their respective sides. Zigzag stitch your pocket to one of the bag sides (inside or outside). I placed mine in the middle.

Step 4: Zigzag stitch the 3 remaining sides together. Fill with your stuff.

  1. I have tried to sew on vinyl but my sewing foot sticks to the vinyl so badly that the vinyl doesn’t feed through the machine. Can you give me any tips on how to help feed the vinyl through the machine?

    • I have a couple suggestions. First of all there is a teflon foot that you can get for sewing on vinyl but that is an expense if you don’t plan on using it again. The second suggestion is to put paper strips to sew on the top piece. The foot will have no problem rolling over the paper. Depending on your machine you may need a strip on the bottom too for easier feeding. After sewing, just pull off the paper. It is much easier to pull off when using a straight stitch than a zig zag, but it works! Have fun!

  2. I want to create transparent pockets to sew onto a jacket. Would you recommend this 10 gauge clear vinyl, or do you have another solution that won’t tear? I am also considering using a plastic zip and not velcro. Do you think this would be too difficult to handle?
