J&O Fabric Store Celebrates 2009: The International Year of Natural Fibers

In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2009 as the International Year of Natural Fibers. So what does that mean for crafters like you and me who stay in search of the latest and greatest in natural fabrics and textiles.

First, it means that we will be hearing a lot more about the pro’s and con’s of various natural fibers with animal and plant origins as well as their bi-products which can range from luxurious apparel, to more traditional and non-traditional industrial uses.

Second, the IYNF will bring more exposure to the natural fibers industry as a whole. From manufacturers and suppliers to retail outlets and designers, profiling natural fibers during a time when ‘go green’ and ecologically friendly goods and materials has become not only an important topic to save the planet, but also a fad as well, is as good as timing can get.

Third, the IYNF will help to promote the efficiency and sustainability of the natural fibers industries as well as appropriate policy responses from governments to the problems faced by natural fiber industries too.

At J&O Fabrics, we commend and congratulate the arduous efforts of the Intergovernmental Group on Hard Fibers, the Intergovernmental Group on Jute, and the participants at the FAO Conference in 2005 for pushing the issue up the hill and out on the peak for the entire world to see.
